Peninsula
Barra Grande is located in the Maraú Peninsula, bordered by the South Atlantic to the east and the Camamu Bay to the west, providing a wonderful mix of open ocean beaches, considered amongst the finest in Brazil, and the calm protected quiet waters of the Camamu Bay. Maraú (an indigenous word meaning the "sun's light at daybreak") is the name given to the peninsula which separates the Camamu Bay (third largest in Brazil) from the waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, a narrow strip of land running north from the Rio de Contas river. The difficulty of access and the designation of the region as an Environment Protection Area have meant that this idyllic part of Bahia still remains virtually undisturbed
