Praia do Forte
and North Coast
Leaving the city behind, this time heading north, to Praia do Forte, a one-time sleepy fishing village and now a preferred vacation destination for many Brazilians. This full day excursion is a mix of the historical, the ecological and relaxation
how it works
The scenic Coconut Highway leads north from Salvador to Praia do Forte, a fishing village 80 kms north of Salvador, home to some of the best beaches in Bahia. The latter section of the drive north is flanked by the distinctive white sands of the sparse restinga vegetation, an ecosystem seen in few regions in Brazil. Praia do Forte takes its name from the fortified Garcia D'Ávila plantation home built in 1556, the oldest stone construction in Bahia and once the home of the largest landowner in the New World, set on the lands of what was the first farm in Brazil. We visit the ruins of the farmstead from where we have a commanding view of the northern coastline. Lunch time sees us in the village of Praia do Forte nearby. After lunch we visit headquarters of the TAMAR Project, the national sea turtle preservation project and one of Brazil's most successful ecological programs. The visitors´ center provides a unique up-close view of these majestic animals. Then time to relax on the beach or browse in the many local handicrafts stores before returning to Salvador.
